You Want a Wife?

I Want a Wife

Judy Brady’s essay entitled “I want a Wife”, which was first published in Ms. Magazine in 1997, has a collection of reasons why one would want a wife. She is a wife and mother herself. One evening, she thought of a male friend of her who was recently divorced and wanting to marry again. After contemplating all the possible reasons of her friend getting remarried, she wondered why someone would not want a wife then!

The reasons why one would want a wife, she starts off with saying that the husband could go to school if he wanted to. While he would be at work, his wife would work at home taking care of his children and put things in order. At the same time, she would bring in money taking a job.Brady further states that she would want a wife who takes care of her husband’s physical needs too. She gives some examples of a wife cleaning, ironing, mending and replacing clothes and cooking for her husband. This wife also takes care of the personal things of her husband so that he might find them in a short hunt. Moreover, she wants a wife who goes on a vacation with her husband and children for change of scene.
Likewise, the writer says that someone would want a wife who would not grumble about her duties to her husband. In contrary, she would only listen to her husband and help him with his paper.

The writer imagines of a wife who takes care of her husband’s social life. His wife makes sure that the children are in bed before the guests arrive. She knows how to entertain guests and serves them well. Also, she understands the needs of her husband’s night out.

In addition, the writer also desires of a wife who is sensitive toward the husband’s sexual need. She would make sure of her husband’s desires and satisfy him although she is wearing out. She would be sexually faithful to her husband and would remain quiet despite knowing his extramarital affairs.

Again, the writer adds up that for all the above reasons, certainly someone who already has a wife still would want a new wife. A husband could have his fresh and new life by replacing his wife with a new wife. He would be free from responsibilities of taking care of his children.

So, when the husband takes up a job, he eventually wants his wife to solely take care of his house and a wife’s duties.

Finally, she exclaims, “My God, who wouldn’t want a wife?”
